چکیده

We aimed to establish whether interventions designed to reduce intergroup bias could be applied to the stereotype threat domain. In three experiments we tested the hypothesis that blurring intergroup boundaries would reduce stereotype threat. In the first study we found that female participants who thought about characteristics shared between the genders tended to show less preference for stereotypical female careers than participants in the baseline condition. In Experiment 2 participants who thought about overlapping characteristics answered more math questions correctly compared to a baseline group and participants who though about differences between the genders. In Experiment 3 we included a specific threat manipulation. Participants who completed the overlapping characteristics task before receiving the threat completed significantly more math questions correctly than participants in the baseline and threat conditions. The findings support the idea that interventions designed to reduce intergroup bias can be applied successfully in the reduction of stereotype threat.

Running head: STEREOTYPE THREAT REDUCES MEMORY ERRORS Stereotype threat can reduce older adults’ memory errors

144 words) Stereotype threat often incurs the cost of reducing the amount of information that older adults accurately recall. In the current research we tested whether stereotype threat can also benefit memory. According to the regulatory focus account of stereotype threat, threat induces a prevention focus in which people become concerned with avoiding errors of commission and are sensitive to...

An age apart: the effects of intergenerational contact and stereotype threat on performance and intergroup bias.

An experimental study examined the effect of intergenerational contact and stereotype threat on older people's cognitive performance, anxiety, intergroup bias, and identification. Participants completed a series of cognitive tasks under high or low stereotype threat (through comparison with younger people). In line with stereotype threat theory, threat resulted in worse performance. However, th...

Threat inoculation: experienced and imagined intergenerational contact prevents stereotype threat effects on older people's math performance.

The authors hypothesized that experienced and imagined intergenerational contact should improve older people's math test performance under stereotype threat. In Experiment 1 (N=51, mean age=69 years), positive prior contact with grandchildren eliminated stereotype threat, which was mediated partially by reduced test-related anxiety. In Experiment 2 (N=84, mean age=72 years), the effect of threa...

Running head: STEREOTYPE THREAT AS REGULATORY MISMATCH Stereotype Threat Reinterpreted as a Regulatory Mismatch

Research documents performance decrements resulting from the activation of a negative task-relevant stereotype. We combine a number of strands of work to identify causes of stereotype threat in a way that allows us to reverse the effects and improve the performance of individuals with negative task-relevant stereotypes. We draw on prior work suggesting that negative stereotypes induce a prevent...

Teaching Stereotype Threat as a Means of Improving Women’s Math Performance

We tested whether informing women about stereotype threat is a useful intervention to improve their performance in a threatening testing situation. Men and women completed difficult math problems described either as a problem-solving task or as a math test. In a third (teaching-intervention) condition, the test was also described as a math test, but participants were additionally informed that ...
